Clean Air Month 2009 Winner

The Monterey County grand prize winner in the Clean Air Month 2009 campaign was Jeff Lindenthal, a Public Education and Recycling Manager at the Monterey Regional Waste Management District.  He won a netbook laptop.

For the past six years, Jeff has been riding his bike to work at least three times a week. His one-way commute is eighteen miles by car, but only sixteen miles by bike, as he is permitted to use a private dirt road shortcut when riding his bike. Occasionally, in order to keep his bike commute to forty-five minutes each way, he drives four miles to a park-and-ride lot and then bikes to work. His main motivation for commuting by bike is health benefits and resource and financial savings.  Jeff is also able to relax and enjoy the scenic ride on his route through Fort Ord.

Of course, biking to work is not without its challenges. Jeff has learned to plan his time carefully, so he can balance family schedules with work and commuting. Also, foggy mornings could make bike commute more difficult. In addition, fast moving traffic, such as traffic on Highway 68, can be stressful. “Courteous drivers are always appreciated,” he notes. However, benefits from biking far exceed the challenges. Jeff is a living proof that biking to work is not only possible, but also enjoyable and very beneficial.

Congratulations!
